This adventure began with a coincidence:
(Skip this bit if you've heard the story before)
* Early this year I saw a "random" google ad on line for hand made Jewelry for sale to support a charity called Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Australia).
It happens that I had heard this name before; an engineering colleague of mine has referred over the years at various times to "Aunt Catherine" coming home from Ethiopia for a visit. He explained that she was running a hospital there and that it was supported by donations from Australia.
* I was curious enough to click on the link in the jewelry ad and saw the charity website for Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, including an opportunity to join the "Great Ethiopian Adventure". Sounded like a true "once in a lifetime" trip, and it looked like a very limited opportunity (only 20 places) BUT - and a very big BUT - intending participants had to commit to raising a large amount of money for the charity if we were to be allowed to come along!
I sent the link to Annette, and followed up with a phone call straight away. She reminded me of Catherine Hamlin's book that we had given to my Mum as a gift some years ago, and we discussed the possibilities associated with trying to do this - and we agreed to "give ot a go!"

We didn't know the first thing about fundraising, so the adventure began. Our target was set at $15000.
